The collision occurred at the intersection of Willard Avenue and Greenlawn Avenue in Newington around 9 a.m. Saturday, April 19, according to police.
The victims were identified as Gabriela Difo, 17; Florinda Tineo, 50; Jeannette Tineo, 48, all of Newington; and Maritza Smith, 56, of New Britain, Newington police said.
Newington Public Schools confirmed that Difo was a senior at Newington High School. Tineo was her mother, and Jeannette Tineo was her aunt. A fifth person was injured in the crash.
Grief counselors will be available Monday to support students mourning Difo’s death, school officials said.
Difo, her mother, and aunt were relatives of Dominican Republic Sen. Pedro Tineo. He posted a memorial to them on his Facebook page. Translated, it reads:
With deep regret, I inform you that the Tineo Nuñez family has suffered an invaluable loss. My dear nieces Florinda, Jeannette and Gabriela have left this world, leaving an irreparable wound and immense pain in our hearts.I sincerely appreciate every message, call and show of solidarity that I have received. I will reply to each one as soon as possible. Thank you for being with us in this time of so much pain.
