Dean was critically injured Thursday, June 12, when Daniel Matthew Anderson, 40, allegedly fired a 20-gauge shotgun at close range during a standoff on Forrest Drive, according to new information released by HPD on Friday, June 13.
During a post-arrest search of the home, detectives and members of the Western Maryland Regional Crime Lab recovered the shotgun used in the shooting, police confirmed.
Dean, who forced entry into a locked room after Anderson refused to surrender, was shot, officials said. HPD described the injuries as significant, and noted that Dean would require additional surgeries.
He remains hospitalized at Meritus Medical Center, where he is still recovering.
Dean was responding to a domestic violence call around 5 a.m. Thursday. Anderson’s wife showed “clear signs of being assaulted,” and two children were also inside the home but were unharmed, police said.
After opening the door, Dean was immediately shot and “started bleeding profusely,” HPD said. He and a second officer ran from the home and received life-saving care in an ambulance already staged outside.
The standoff lasted more than eight hours. Anderson finally surrendered around 4:35 p.m. and is currently being held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center.
Detectives are continuing to investigate the case.
